FUNCTIONALITY.

The two basic functions of the FLEX flameless venting device are explosion venting and prevention of fire propagation into surrounding areas where personnel and neighbouring equipment may be located.

The explosion venting device bursts opens due to fast increasing pressure from the start of an explosion and the FLEX housing absorbs flame, burning dust, and gases. As opposed to explosion venting, the FLEX device is capable to absorb these undesirable effects thanks to its construction. This means the FLEX can be used safely in spaces that are occupied by personnel and equipment.

The explosion venting can achieve temperatures up to 1 500 °C, with light metals such as aluminum and magnesium the temperature being around 3 000 °C. During explosion venting with the FLEX flameless equipment, the temperature is lowered to a safe level that is not dangerous for surrounding equipment and for work and movement of personnel.

PARAMETERS.

The FLEX flameless venting device is suitable for a variety of applications, such as dust filters, bins, mills, crushers, dust separators, cyclones and much more. They have 100% efficiency and boast the possibility of application on technologies that are processing dusts with high explosion value parameters, including light metal dusts. The FLEX units are also certified for explosive dusts with extremely low values of minimum initiation energy and minimum initiation temperature (MIT & MIT).

APPLICATION.

In the above visualisation of explosion protection design for a dust filtration unit, we can see a FLEX flameless venting device partnered with a B-FLAP explosion isolation flap valve. This partnership can be used indoors where personnel and surrounding equipment are present as the explosion will be completely contained given the protection devices are designed accordingly with the applications parameters in mind.

The explosion starts and the initial pressure wave blasts open the VMP explosion venting device that is housed within the FLEX unit. The FLEX flame quenching membrane stops flames and harsh fumes from exiting the housing – all that can be seen from the outside of the application is a puff of smoke. As the explosion intends to propagate through the ductwork to connecting applications and processes, the B-FLAP valve is also triggered by the initial pressure wave of the explosion, causing it to slam shut into place and blocking propagation of the explosion.

After the explosion is finished, a quick inspection of the B-FLAP is needed to ensure it is safe to return to operation, and the VMP explosion vent panel inside the FLEX must be replaced. That is why we always recommend spare panels are kept on site for easy reinstatement so the process can get back to work as quickly as possible after an initiation.
